OYODO YAKI-Ceramics of Nara Prefecture

Matsubayashi Genei of Yoshino, Nara Prefecture.

Genei was born in 1954, the third son of Asahi Yaki potter Matsubayashi Tōsai in Uji, Kyoto. His kiln is located in Yoshino, Nara Prefecture. He focuses mostly on yakishime, although he also does some kohiki. Most works are surprisingly lightweight and easy to use. They have an amazing ring to them. What probably impressed me the most was his variety of forms, his attention to detail for how each piece would be used, and his use of incised decorations to create both a modern and ancient flair. He usually forms his work by hand, only occasionally using the wheel. I had a wonderful time chatting with him and learning about his works. I hope to take him up on his invitation to visit his kiln in Yoshino sometime in the future.

I love Japanese pottery and porcelain. Having lived in Japan for many years, and now going back and forth between the USA and Japan often, I am able to research the Japanese pottery that I love. I have visited many kilns throughout Japan, attended many exhibitions, visited large ceramic museums and hole in the wall shows. I have met many wonderful potters, some famous in the West, some not. I have researched many potters and their marks. I have information on many marks in my files, some I have recorded from my own collection, others from books, pamphlets, and “papers” from the kilns themselves. When I first started this blog I intended it as a way to learn about the many modern pieces was finding and to keep track of what I was learning. Over time I have also begun studying and collecting vintage and antique ceramics as well. These will also be included even if they don't really fall under the original title for my blog.

I am NOT taking any queries right now.

I have had so many requests that I am unable to continue with this service. It takes alot of time to research requests and I am not able to keep up.
