You are invited to come along with me as I learn about Japanese ceramics. I will share what I learn about the kilns, history, terminology, potters, decorators, styles, and marks. This is a work in progress. ** NOTICE: I DO NOT ANSWER QUERIES ON PERSONAL PIECES. I DO NOT GIVE VALUATIONS. General comments and questions will still be accepted.

I have an 18 piece blue cherry blossom on white tea set with the Nippon Tokusei markings, but Nippon is not written right to left nor left to right. The markings are written vertically. What does that mean in so far as dating goes? There are only 2 markings, the A and B looking marks, but not the fan looking one or other images. Also, only the cups are marked.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a pre-war set but unless I see them I cannot confirm.
Deletei have one with only an "import" stamp... could that be a copy?
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure what you mean, but nobody would make a copy of this kind of ware. There would be no financial advantage.
ReplyDeleteI just found a tea set with the last red rising stamp on them. It was a full set for $5. Interested to know more about where it came from, and if it is safe to use.
ReplyDeleteProbably from the Nagoya area. It’s probably safe to use occasionally, but there may be some lead in glazes on some designs.
DeleteI have gold marks on my set. How old are they?
ReplyDeleteProbably post war, if 日本特製 is written in this order left to right.
